What Kind Of Magazine Is This?
A self-critique, reflection, and explanation of THE/RISE Magazine.
You might be new to THE/RISE and never held a physical copy in your hands. If you've been confused by what THE/RISE Magazine is or how it works, this is the blog post for you! We're not going to get into the brand or purpose of THE/RISE (to create story makers). That information is talked about extensively on our home page and other blog posts. This post is about the tangible business traits that you might have wondered about, but never thought you could ask.
WHAT (is it?)
What is THE/RISE Magazine? The word "Magazine" may be deceiving. When you hear magazine you think subscription and monthly or bi-monthly editions. This is one way THE/RISE Magazine may have been difficult to understand. The first issue of THE/RISE Magazine was printed in December of 2017, which makes it about 6 months old. However, the stories inside are timeless. We don't feature current event pieces; these are people's stories, and a story in issue 01 could just have easily appeared in future issue 400.
I self-critique myself on this all the time, and I've actually tried to use the word "issue" less and less. Are they Editions, or Volumes? I've wondered.
It also might be misleading when you hold a physical copy. Sturdy and printed on thick stock with a matte finish, it's meant to stand the test of time on your bookshelf. To be pulled off your shelf in 5 years to reread a favorite story.
WHY (so slow?)
Why did we do it this way? Why don't we just pump out issue after issue? Well first off, a lot of work goes into an issue and we're a small 3-person, part-time team. Someday we might be able to put out issues faster, but it's just not possible with our small, dedicated team.
The other reason is that it takes time to gather and help people write their stories. Once they've finished, it's a very intimate thing to be handed someone's story. We don't want to cheapen that relationship by pushing issue after issue like a factory. Not just our hearts are inside issue 01, but also 9 authors' hearts are in issue 01 and that means something to us.
We're looking for the right stories and the right people. We'd much rather have two great issues a year than 12 fast issues a year. Someday we might have 12 issues a year, if we can maintain the same quality standards we pursue now.
HOW (does it survive?)
This part is transparent, but I have no problem sharing how THE/RISE survives. Right now, sales of issue 01. We don't have big advertisers and we limit the number of ads to keep the content focused on stories. We started THE/RISE using a Kickstarter campaign. It was a success and we raised our goal of $5,000 to print the first issue. We still have copies of issue 01 and we'd love to sell every last one of them.
If you don't have a copy of issue 01, it would mean the world to me if you would order a copy.
We love putting out free content like the blog, and we'll continue to expand all the content we give away.
If you've ever found value in something we've said it would mean so much if you would share THE/RISE with your friends and help other people discover THE/RISE.
WHERE (is it going?)
In the last 6 months, we've learned a lot. The main thing is that the amount of free value we need to provide will only increase. People need help understanding their story. Even if we only write one blog post that breaks through to someone and we never hear or feature their story in THE/RISE, it's still on our heart to help people understand how important their story is.
We're going to continue the blog. We've been shooting for launching a new blog every other day. We're hoping we can keep this up for the foreseeable future. We've launched three new blog categories on Identity, Purpose, and Story because we think all three of these topics are big enough and important enough to being a Story Maker.
We'd also like to launch a podcast, but we're still working through how we can build something that is different than what's already being done. We don't need a podcast, but it's an important medium, and if we can bring new value through podcasts we're going to do it.
Lastly, we're working on issue 02. It's taken longer than we've hoped, and we're still looking for about three stories. If you've been on the fence about sending a story, I would encourage you to reach out. We can help develop your storytelling so you can articulate the message you want to get across. In the meantime, pick up issue 01. I have a copy on my desk, and I marvel at it every day. If you got all the way to the end of this blog post that takes dedication, and we're thankful for your time. Here is an offer code for 30% off issue 01 in our store. Offer code: LONGBLOG!
You can use this to buy one copy for yourself or multiple copies for friends. Again, If you don't have a copy of issue 01, it would mean the world to me if you would order a copy.
Thank you again for your support and attention. I hope THE/RISE can bring you value in some way and I truly hope everyone gets to hold a physical copy of THE/RISE in their hands. Unplug for 30 minutes, take THE/RISE to the park, and just read all the amazing stories of what people are doing.
